Out of This World: Toddlers Blast Off into Early Years Space Exploration
Discovering Planets and Colours in the Toddler Room
At Monkey Puzzle Grange Road Day Nursery, we love launching exciting learning journeys that spark a child’s natural curiosity. Recently, our toddlers embarked on an out of this world space adventure right in their room. Together, we explored the wonders of the solar system, learning about the sun, the moon, and the surrounding planets. Using bright paints to decorate the celestial bodies, the children loved discovering different colours, enthusiastically selecting green and blue to bring our very own planet Earth to life.
Building Numeracy Through Songs and Count Downs
Early mathematical development happens naturally through creative play and song. As we crafted our planets, the toddlers practised counting from 1 to 5, pairing hands-on art with early numeracy skills. The excitement reached new heights when one observant toddler pointed out a rocket. Taking their lead, we launched into a lively rendition of “Zoom, Zoom, Zoom, We’re Going to the Moon,” ending our space session with a thrilling group countdown all the way from 10 down to blast off!
Nurturing Language and Expressive Arts in Early Years
Themed creative sessions do far more than entertain, they provide rich opportunities for language development. Singalongs and dramatic play help toddlers build rhythm, expand their vocabulary, and gain confidence in expressing themselves. By following the children’s spontaneous interests, our practitioners create a supportive environment where every child feels heard, valued, and excited to participate in group activities.
Learning Through Creative Space Play and Numeracy
Activities like this support a wide range of areas of development while making learning enjoyable and engaging. As the children decorated the planets, they were strengthening their fine motor control, colour recognition, and artistic expression. Singing songs and counting down reinforced early number confidence, working memory, and sequential thinking. Interactive space activities encourage children to become curious, confident learners while helping them make sense of science and numbers through imaginative play.
