Our Own Planet Earth: Nature Art in the Forest at Our Cambridge Nursery
At Monkey Puzzle Grange Road, our Cambridge day nursery, the forest is one of our favourite classrooms. Today, the children headed outdoors and worked together to create their very own Planet Earth, made entirely from natural materials they found around them.
Building a Planet from Stones, Leaves and Soil
Working on a large piece of cardboard, the children collected stones, leaves, bark, sticks and soil to represent the different geographical features of our planet. As they gathered and arranged each material, they explored its texture, shape and colour, deciding together where everything should go to bring their Earth to life.
Why Learning in Nature Matters for Your Child
This hands-on activity encouraged creativity, teamwork and problem-solving, as the children shared ideas and worked out together how to turn natural objects into land, mountains and more. It also helped them begin to understand our planet’s diverse landscapes and why it’s so important to care for nature. For your child, outdoor learning like this builds confidence, cooperation and a genuine connection with the natural world, giving them a rich early years experience that goes well beyond the classroom.
