Little Scientists at Work: Hands-On Water Experiments at Our Cambridge Nursery
At Monkey Puzzle Grange Road, our Cambridge day nursery, some of the best early years learning happens with sleeves rolled up and hands in the mud. Today our children became little scientists, exploring how water behaves when it meets soil, sand, and stones. It is the kind of simple, hands-on STEM activity that builds real understanding from the very first pour.
Pouring, Mixing, and Discovering
The children poured water over soil, sand, and stones, mixed everything together, and watched closely to see what happened. Through their own observations they discovered that soil can absorb and hold water, which is exactly what plants need to help them grow. Every child had the chance to test an idea, see the result for themselves, and talk about what they noticed.
Why Hands-On Science Matters in the Early Years
A tray of soil and a jug of water might look like messy play, but it is doing important work. As the children experiment, they are developing observation, prediction, and cause and effect skills, the building blocks of scientific thinking. They learn to ask what might happen, test it, and make sense of the answer. For your child, that means childcare that nurtures curiosity and confidence alongside a real understanding of the world around them. These are habits of mind that will serve them well at school and far beyond, and they are woven into everyday life at our nursery.
